Distracted Drivers

Distracted drivers are one of the most serious hazards we face on the road today. Texting and driving now kills more teens than drunk driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that texting while driving is six times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. And yet, we do not come close to holding distracted drivers to the tough criminal standards that we apply to drunk drivers. Our Minot accident attorneys take distracted driving very seriously, and we are here to fight for justice for you.

Common Distractions

Texting and other device use is probably the most dangerous distraction we commonly see on our roads today, but even the age old distractions that do not involve technology can still be deadly. Examples of common distractions that cause accidents include:

  • Texting
  • Taking selfies
  • Surfing the internet
  • Talking on the phone, even hands-free
  • Eating and drinking
  • Personal grooming
  • Tending to children
  • Adjusting the stereo
  • Reaching for objects in the floorboard or backseat
  • Talking to passengers
  • Daydreaming
  • Rubbernecking
  • Reading

Although it may be years before we see the criminal penalties for distracted driving reach the level they have for drunk drivers, we can make a difference through public awareness and education. Please, talk to your teen about the dangers of texting while driving today.
